From the last thread:

re: #163 austin_blue

Unfortunately, the State Department has listed the Kurdistan Workers Party [PKK] as a terrorist organisation for a very long time. As long as that listing remains, Kurds become a convenient scapegoat when any nation in the region wants to slag them (by claiming every Kurd supports the PKK).

Carrying over from the last thread: Yes, I did audition for Canadian Idol back in 2004. I felt kind of bad because I did it just as a “shits and giggles” thing and made it farther than other people who had been practicing for weeks.

As mentioned I did sing “Sundown” by Gordon Lightfoot and here’s the Youtube proof (keeping private because it shows my real name):

Also, “Rainy Day People” is another great Lightfoot tune as is the legendary “Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.”

Rep. Elijah Cummings, as the incoming chair of the House Oversight Committee, has fired off fifty-one letters to people who were told by that committee before to submit information and blew the committee off. He intends to lay down subpoenas if they don’t comply now. (The GOP after requesting information basically said “well, what can ya do?”)

I cannot reiterate, at any level, the rage I feel, and what a punch in the mouth is to the Kurds.

This is a complete abandonment of our fiercest and most trusted ally in the Middle East over the past 15 years of the war against Iraq/ISIS.

They were instrumental in liberating Mosul and driving ISIS out of their territory in Syria. They fought and died for us.

Not to mention that we allowed Saddam to gas them by the thousands after the 2001 war. We threw them under the bus before. We owe them a tremendous level of support now, and we have abandoned them.

This is just the stupidest thing we have ever done as a foreign policy decision that I can remember.

If I was the Kurdish government, I would do my best to burn the US down to cinders. We deserve it.

So tonight while playing Red Dead Redemption 2 I happened to ride by a random KKK meeting where they were inducting a new member. I sat there on my horse and listened to them for a bit then threw a volatile fire bottle into the middle of the bunch and watched them all burn. While I was looting their bodies I found a meeting note where one of the agenda items was something like “can we find a way to make our robes less flammable?”

Jesus this game is lit.

Generally the embassy in Beijing only closes Dec. 25, so I’m not sure if.this is some kind of policy change or a last minute Christmas gift before he shuts the government down.

Lisco State Aid Bridge (goes to Wikipedia, more at the link, with photo):

The Lisco State Aid Bridge is located on a county road over the North Platte River south of Lisco, Nebraska. Completed in 1928, the bridge today “is distinguished as an important crossing of the Platte River and one of the last two intact multiple-span state aid truss bridges” in Nebraska.

Democrats Plan Separate Fix For Voting Rights Act To Make Chief Justice Roberts Happy (goes to Huffington Post, more at the link):

The big reform package on voting rights, campaign finance and ethics that House Democrats plan to pass in January will not include a reauthorization and fix to the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

Democrats on the House Judiciary Committee, along with outside voting rights litigators, will support moving the Voting Rights Act measure separately to ensure they build a legislative record that will show why the law is still necessary when it faces court challenges.

“Everybody wants to make sure that they do this right and in a way that will not only be a stronger fix for the Voting Rights Act but also will be able to withstand any constitutional challenges,” said Wendy Weiser, director of the Democracy Program for the Brennan Center for Justice.

Our Xmas classics are Lord of the Rings and the Winnetou series. The latter come on German TV at Xmas, they are based on novels by Karl May, a 19th century German who had never visited America when he wrote his novels and are totally clueless…but classic.

Jesus this game is lit.

coworker tells me she loves spending time creating odd looking costumes which she then wears into various towns and camps. Others will ONLY comment on her outfits when she is wearing something odd. A various nice game touch.

Trump’s about to fuck himself royally as our allies in Syria - the Syrian Kurds - who would be fucked by Trump’s hasty retreat from Syria - are considering a release of 3,200 IS prisoners and their families.

Top officials of the Syrian Democratic Forces, the Kurdish-led and American-supported militia fighting the Islamic State in eastern Syria, met Wednesday to discuss the option of releasing about 1,100 Islamic State fighters and 2,080 relatives of the group’s members, according to Rami Abdul Rahman, the head of the Syrian Observatory on Human Rights.

Mostapha Bali, the spokesman for the Syrian Democratic Forces, or S.D.F., denied there was any discussion of releasing prisoners from the Islamic State, also known as ISIS or ISIL. “Any news coming from such sources is not reliable and is not coming from us,” he said.

But a Western official from the United States-led coalition fighting in Syria, which includes more than a dozen countries, confirmed that such discussions had taken place.

Let that sink in.

Trump thinks he won Syria.

Russia, Assad, and Iran are cheering the decision.

Our allies are like, fuck this.

That Erdogan and Bibi think they’re cool with this speaks volumes to how both are cozying up to Putin while recognizing that Trump’s pulling the rug out from under them.

Bibi thinks that Russia will help Israel in the long term. He’s as delusional as Trump is these days. Erdogan’s an autocrat in waiting, and will play power politics so long as it means getting rid of the Kurdish threat (and this move will help with that goal as Erdogan considers the Kurds a greater threat long term than IS).

So Ryan and the GOP caucus have to do a vote where they go on the record showing they don’t have the votes for a wall, so they can pass a clean CR with ZERO wall funding because Trump can’t/wont do math (and for a change Ryan managed to whip the caucus to know they don’t have the votes either without actually doing the vote).

I have heard tons about it and based on my FB feed, it is a beloved Xmas cult classic.

Trump’s about to fuck himself royally as our allies in Syria - the Syrian Kurds - who would be fucked by Trump’s hasty retreat from Syria - are considering a release of 3,200 IS prisoners and their families.

And there’s this, too:

D-day… we climbed 10 story cliffs with ropes and ladders at the beaches. You actually think a wall will stop a determined group from crossing?

You also need people manning the border wall. That’s an even bigger cost than the capital construction. Because the wall is a one-shot cost; you have to pay to man it.

the thrill is gone for Lindsey…

Maybe: but he still seems to be hedging his bets by urging the Orange Imbecile to veto the funding CR.

Of which veto the results are likely going to be:

A) Congress having to hang out and re-hash Trumpian idiocy over “The Wall”.
B) A pre-holiday government shutdown. Blame for which is universally assumed to be going to fall on Trump and the GOP.
C) A veto override (followed, I would guess by a very hasty adjournment). Another embarrassment for Trump/GOP.

Oh wait, maybe Lindsay IS losing the thrill…..?

Substantial misunderstanding, or perhaps lack of appreciation, of mathematics always manifests itself in markets.

Most people just buy into the idea of a “return” measured in a percentage of the initial investment. Say a 5% “return”.

But that can’t go on forever, because that assumption assumes an exponential (correctly used term here) curve describes “wealth”.

But that cannot happen in the real world of molecules, planets, etc.

The DJIA, and so many other markets, have to go through serious corrections from time and time.

And the follies of governments, or in this case Trump, just triggers reactionary movements in investors.

Trump needs Congressional approval and he doesn’t have the votes.

So, either demand and get a clean CR, or the GOP owns yet another GOP shutdown.
